Malkom was playing outside one crisp Friday night when my mom was trying to leave to visit my grandma. Malkom played around in front of the car, and my mom was very slow and very careful not to hit him. Our driveway is really long, so it was taking forever to leave, when suddenly Malkom disappeared. Mom was worried that he'd come back, so she began to gain speed. Then her car bounced, and she said to Cole and Nick in the backseat, "I hit him."
She got out onto the road and turned the car around.
I was upstairs typing when it happened, and suddenly I couuld hear cries and whines coming from outside, and I thought that maybe an animal had gotten hurt. So I ran downstairs and out the front door. Malkom was running towards me whining, but I thought he wasn't hurt. Then he turned around.
His tail had been completely stripped of skin, and all that was left was a bloody bone. Even on his bottom no skin remained. I started to cry, and scream for my parents to call a vet. They couldn't reach anyone and it was really late at night.
Finally they got a hold of Valley View Vet Clinic in Twin Falls ID and we jumped into the car and rode the fifteen minute drive into town.
The car was covered in Malkom's blood, and it seemed like the drive took forever.
Finally we pulled up to the small clinic and jumped out of the car. We led Malkom into the back room and the vet immediately said, "We're gonna have to amputate it." I began to cry buckets again.
The next morning we picked up Malkom. He was groggy from blood loss, and all he could do for the next week was sleep.
Now Malkom's stitches won't stay closed so he's gonna have to grow new skin. Malkom's tail will never have hair on it, or rather, his stub.
But he's doing better, and just got off his antibiotics. We think we're gonna buy some more so that he doesn't get the open wound infected.
